There are many variations of poker and you should explore all types if you want to find out which one fits for you. Every kind is special in its own way and has its own strategies. There is draw poker, stud poker and community card poker.
In draw poker the full hand of every player is hidden up until the showdown, whereas in stud poker certain cards are dealt faceup, but not all, and in community cards poker some of the cards are shown to be used by the players when forming their hands.
Almost every form of poker can be played high low or low. In high low the hand that ranks highest and the one that ranks lowest are used to divide the pot, and if there is an odd chip, then the high hand receives it, but if more hands are tied (either for high or low), then they divide their half of the pot. Usually the lowest hand possible is 7-5-4-3-2 in more suits, but in certain games the ace can be considered the lowest card, making a hand of 6-4-3-2-A, which would be the lowest hand and a pair of aces the lowest pair.
Draw poker pretty much replaced straight poker. In straight poker the players were each dealt the cards facedown, followed by one betting interval and then a showdown. But when draw poker took over, each player could discard one or more of the cards originally received and receive new cards in order to make a more favorable hand for themselves. After the “draw” there is another betting interval and then the showdown.
Draw poker, however, became less popular as stud poker took over. Stud poker can be of two kinds: the five card stud and the seven card stud. The five card stud however is not really played anymore since the 1950s, but seven card stud is still very popular in many poker clubs and tournaments.
Community card poker is a very popular type and many of its variants are played very much in the present day. Texas hold’em and Omaha are two examples of community card poker but there are many other enjoyable recreational kinds played all around the world by poker enthusiasts. Community card poker is probably the best kind to play among friends on the so-called poker nights. It is perfect for an enjoyable weekend evening.
